New Album “The Narrows” Announced Today.
Greetings from Tennessee!
With the year coming to a close, we enter the season of gathering and reflection. We also fix our eyes and our hopes on the new. I have a great deal to be thankful for and some news about my upcoming album that I’m eager to share. I’m thrilled to announce that my new album The Narrows will be released on March 18, 2016 on Yep Roc Records. The Narrows will be available for pre-order beginning December 3. By pre-ordering you’ll also be able download the new song Cry Cry immediately!
American Songwriter has just written a great feature on the song Cry Cry.
Folk Radio UK will also be premiering the song this week.
Touring so much, over the last year, has given me a chance to introduce a lot of new songs. If you made it out to the show, then there’s a good chance you heard me sing Cry Cry, Loaded Gun, Smoke And Sparks and other yet to be released songs. The thirteen song album was recorded in Nashville, where I now call home. As I’ve hinted in previous months, The Narrows is partly acoustic and partly electric, all of it featuring the raw intensity of a trio. Much of what you hear is live on the floor, bleed n’ all. Some of it simmers, some of it thunders. I feel it’s a potent brew of my most natural inclinations. The title comes from a lyric in one of the songs. Moccasin Creek features a line about going “Down to the Narrows, where the water picks up…” It’s that place in the river where the current is treacherous. There are times in life like that – when things intensify and I found the title to be an apt one.
The CD, vinyl LP and download will all be available through Yep Roc, in addition to record outlets worldwide. There’s also a cool t-shirt so make sure to take advantage of the great bundles Yep Roc is offering. Check out the Yep Roc store!

And of course come on out to the show! The Tour kicks off in January 2016. I’ll be joining the line-up at the 7th annual 30A Songwriters Festival in Santa Rosa beach, Florida January 15 -17. With Jackson Browne, Shovels And Rope, it’s going to be a great event! Next San Diegan singer Steve Poltz and I take to the road for a duel-headliner, followed by a number of solo dates and my European Tour starting in April. (more dates to come, please follow the updates at grantleephillips.com/concerts)
Looking back. It’s been a busy one, 2015. Lot’s of travel, lot’s of shows. From living rooms to European theaters and festivals, it’s been a year on the go. Giant Sand’s Howe Gelb, shared the wheel for a bunch of these shows, as did Steve Poltz last spring. One of the year’s highlights for me was the Aarhus Festuge in Denmark, where I had the opportunity to perform with Joe Henry, Billy Bragg and Rhiannon Giddens. Backed by Bob Dylan’s long time bassist Tony Garnier, Danish pianist Diego Schissi and multi-instrumentalist Gustaf Ljungren, it was a night to cherish. My friend Howe, who has nearly adopted Aarhus as a second home, performed the following night with Giant Sand, calling up guests that included myself, M. Ward and Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelly. Looking back on it, 2015 found me performing with others on several occasions. One of the most memorable was playing mandolin and harmonizing with my friend, comic-singer Margaret Cho on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert back in November. Australian singer Ben Lee, rapper/DJ Princess Superstar and I had the pleasure of joining Margaret on her tune called “Lice.” You can check it out!
Hope that one made you smile or at least scratch your head.
Again, thank you for your continued interest and please keep an ear to ground for The Narrows and upcoming shows. Here’s to a blessed and more peaceful New Year!
